Are You Suffering From Adrenal Fatigue?

Approximately 80% of adults suffer from adrenal fatigue at one point or time, but according to James Wilson, the author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome, it remains as one of the most under-diagnosed illnesses in the United States.

So what is adrenal fatigue and what are the symptoms? Adrenal fatigue happens when the adrenal glands are overworked. These glands produce stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. When the adrenal glands are overworked, they stop functioning efficiently. You may have a case of adrenal fatigue if you experience any of these symptoms: low energy and exhaustion, insomnia or broken sleep patterns, weight gain, food cravings, anxiety, lack of concentration, grouchiness, and low tolerance for stressful situations.

A lot of these probably sound familiar in this day and age where we constantly push ourselves to get more done and do not allow ourselves to recover both physically and mentally. Here are some ways to get your body back on track if suffering from adrenal fatigue.

* Eat regularly and don’t skip meals. Consume healthy snacks if hungry between meals. Be sure to include lots of protein in your diet.

* Eat within an hour of waking up to restore blood sugar levels.

* Skip the caffeine and processed sugar. Both of these are stimulants that strain the adrenal glands.

* Limit alcohol consumption.

* Get at least seven hours of sleep each night.

* Maintain an exercise routine that keeps you feeling refreshed and not drained.
