Patellofemoral syndrome is one of the most common causes of knee pain. Often referred to as runner’s knee or jumper’s knee, this condition is frequently seen in athletes, but it can affect people of all activity levels.
The most common symptom of patellofemoral syndrome is a dull, aching pain in the front of the knee, sometimes accompanied by mild swelling. Many individuals also notice a grinding or clicking sensation when bending or straightening the leg, especially during activities such as walking upstairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting.
Common Causes
Patellofemoral syndrome typically develops due to one or more of the following factors:
- Overuse of the knee, which is the most common cause and explains why the condition is often associated with sports and repetitive activities
- Muscle imbalances, particularly in muscles that support and stabilize the knee
- Trauma or injury, such as a fall or direct impact to the knee
Treatment Options
Treatment for patellofemoral syndrome depends on the severity of symptoms and the underlying cause. Conservative care is often effective and may include:
- The RICE protocol (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) to reduce pain and inflammation
- Physical therapy, which may involve targeted strengthening and stretching exercises, manual therapy, patellar taping, and the use of supportive braces
- Activity modification, which is often necessary to allow proper healing and help prevent recurring injury
